The Mediterranean Sea, the Ebro river and the massif Els Ports come together in Terres de l'Ebre, a beautiful region with a surprising variety of sceneries and rich environmental ecosystems.
The Ebro river connects sea and mountain. A natural hydrologic corridor gets articulated around the river, bordering on the mountain range Els Ports. Fitted in the bank forest, the river enjoys itself in meanders before getting to the delta plains, the mouth and the sea. Here the river achieves the nicest splendour: salt marshes, paddies, thin-sandy beaches, pink Flamingos, and more than 350 bird species to become one of the most important natural spaces – and also most fragile – in the western Mediterranean region. The Delta plains highly differ from the northerly rocky coast. The Mediterranean bush prevails, between coves with translucent water, pine groves, and the palm heart, the only European autochthonous palm tree.
Inland, there are imposing cliffs in Els Ports Natural Park, where you can get an exceptional view over the Valley of the Ebro from. Mountain rivers and monumental trees embellish the scenery, full of Mediterranean wild vegetation. As for fauna, you can see the Hispanic goat, one of the autochthonous species and true symbol of the massif. Also vultures and otters can be seen in humid places. Pine groves and oak woods occupy most of the land. We can enjoy the colourful Fageda del Retaule, the most southerly European beech forest. Here you can visit el Faig Pare (Beech Father), almost 25 m high, which is believed to be about 250 old.
There are lots of offices to help the people who want to visit the natural spaces in Terres de l'Ebre: the reception centres in the Delta de l’Ebre Natural Park and Els Ports Natural Park, and the municipal tourist offices, provide the visitors with all the necessary information to enjoy this rich natural heritage.
