Castell de Sant Jordi d'Alfama

add to the planner

Really close to the beach and to the cliffs that border the coast of L ' Ametlla de Mar, there is the Castle of Sant Jordi d'Alfama. The origin of this fortress traces back to the foundation, in 1201, of the first house of the order of Sant Jordi of Alfama, created with the purpose of preventing the zone from piracy. The castle was besieged in several occasions but the definitive destruction came in 1650, when it was bombed from the sea. The defensive set was re-built completely in the eighteenth century and that's why a big part of the building has survived even up to ourtimes. Even if the interior of the fortress is not adapted for visits, a walk along its surroundings will be a good way of savouring its history, but also the caves and the rocky scenery of the coast of L'Ametlla de Mar.
