The XX century regional literature is undoubtedly linked to writer Jesus Moncada (Mequinensa, 1941 - Barcelona, 2005). He mixes realism and fantasy - to recreate the past of the ancient village Mequinensa, now buried under the waters of the river Ebro and reconstructed in a few higher areas of the region Baix Cinca, near Terres de l'Ebre. One of the most important novel by Jesus Moncada is "Towpath", which takes the name of the footpath that used to border the Ebro from Tortosa to Mequinensa. When the wind was not favourable, pack animals and sirgadors - strong men - were located in this way where they were pushing the fluvial crafts upstream with the help of ropes from. In fact, the local culture and admosphere became the protagonists of most of his novels . Writer Pere Calders defined Jesus Moncada:" Jesus Moncada saw his childhood's world buried under the waters (swept by deep socioeconomic transformations) . It was a world full of personality: the Mequinensa with lignite mines, inland navigation, vegetable garden, cattle and hunting. Miners adn farmers used to hunt rabbits, partridges (and sometimes deer), which allowed animated conversations in the bar. Two rivers, the Ebro and the Segre, were joining in Mequinensa. Between two shores, the ancient village had seen the centuries passing, interrupted only by wars and by political changes. The customs and our language were preserved . Administratively, Mequinensa belongs to Saragossa. A division of lives and of interests that always marks the people's personality.

Jesus Moncada also wrote: Stories of the left hand (1981), The Coffee of the Frog (1985) and Astonished Skulls (1999) and the novels, Towpath (1988), The gallery of the statues (1992) and Shaken memory (1997). His books deserved awards: Joan Crexells, the Criticism National award , Ciutat de Barcelona award , Serra d'or Criticism . He was awarded the Award of Catalan Writers because of the quality of his work (2001) and Sant Jordi Cross (2001). His books have been translated into a dozen languages. He was a translator who translated quite a few books from Spanish, French and English into Catalan. He was a member of the Writers' Association in Catalan Language.
