HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL PATRIMONY, religious buildings
Religious buildings Religious buildings Religious buildings

In the regions of the Ebro there are outstanding examples of religious architecture from different times and functionalities, from Gothic churches (Sant Lluc in Ulldecona or the Cathedral of Tortosa) to the set of Renaissance churches in Terra Alta, where we can see the evolution from Gothic to Baroque. The convents, inhabited by different religious orders, also show several architectural styles. Chapels and sanctums became very popular and usually received traditional pilgrimages. We find them in almost every village, spread around the territory. It was the place where the local Saint (sant patró) used to be worshipped, often accompanied with a great festivity.

Cathedrals and churches

Religious buildingsThere are numerous churches in the Ebro region with impressive façades and important decorative interior elements: façades, arches, rose windows, stained glass windows, altarpieces and the decorative pieces can be discovered by the observant visitor. The most outstanding example is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, in Tortosa, built between the XIVth and XVIIIth centuries, which has quite preserved the original Gothic style, although the façade and the main chapels are baroque. We must also remark its altarpieces from the XIVth and XVth centuries, and the Renaissance choir. As for churches, we will mention in chronological order: the medieval church in Palma d'Ebre, the church in Gandesa, with a Romanesque porch, the Gothic church in Horta de Sant Joan, Sant Lluc’s church in Ulldecona, the Renaissance Miravet church, and some others.

Convents

Religious buildingsThe convents appeared in the Ebro region at the time of the repopulation, XIIth century. The Sant Salvador convent or Verge dels Àngels (Virgin of Angels), in Horta de Sant Joan, is the oldest examples. Built by the Templars in the XIIIth century and extended by the Hospitable in the XIVth century, it also received the constructive trace of the Franciscans. Moreover, the medieval Convent of Santa Clara, in Tortosa, has a Gothic cloister, from the XIIIth century. In Ulldecona we find the convent of the Augustinian Nuns, founded in 1724 by the Order of Hospital, but with a church built at the end of the XIXth century. At present there is a nuns' community, but the images and original files were destroyed during different wars. Also in Móra d'Ebre, we find the convent of the Minimes, from the end of XIXth century. The newest example, however, is in Vinebre. The modernist Convent or Teresines School , which was constructed in 1904 by architect Bernat Martorell, Gaudí’s disciple.

Hermitages and Sanctuaries

Religious buildingsHermitages and Sanctuaries were built at the outskirts of villages or, sometimes, a few kilometres away. In the past, they were important centres of popular devotion, and pilgrimages and festivities were celebrated there which, sometimes, used to congregate people from several villages. At present, some of these popular festivities are still celebrated. One of the best examples is the sanctuary of La Fontcalda, in Gandesa, ancient spa that became famous because of its medicinal waters. The Ermita de la Pietat (Hermitage of the Virgin of Piety), in Ulldecona, the Santuari del Remei (Santuary of Remedy), in Alcanar, Sant Roc, in Paüls, or the Hermitage of the Virgin, in l’Aldea, are some of the numerous religious buildings we can find.
