HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL PATRIMONY, Castles and fortifications
PATRIMONI HISTÃ’RIC I MONUMENTAL, CASTELLS I Castles and fortifications

The Ebro river has historically played a decisive role in the articulation of Terres de l'Ebre. It has been an important communication axis for centuries and it has often been a natural border too. Numerous civilizations have settled near the river, which have left an important architectural patrimony, specially castles and defense towers. We should remark the Miravet Castle, the Castle La Suda in Tortosa, and lots of watchtowers that border on the course of the river.

Watchtowers

The final stretch of the Ebro has preserved a large number of medieval watchtowers. Most of them were built on top of small hills near the river so as to control the ships that were sailing upstream. On the coast we also find a set of fortifications, covering the riverside of the Ebro, which were used to prevent invasions and pirates' possible attacks.

Near the fluvial course of the Ebro river there are some ancient historical castles. From the Iberians to our times, the articulating role of the river as communication axis has attracted numerous cultures that have left an important architectural and military patrimony. Thus, the Templar fortifications in villages like Miravet or Ulldecona have become the patrimonial testimony of one of the most convulsed periods in the history of Terres de l'Ebre.

The defensive needs and the evolution of the systems of siege turned the town of Tortosa (Baix Ebre) into an immense framework of walls that were surrounding the place. A set of fortifications from diverse periods that used to lodge and also peasants when there was a war. A journey around all these spaces becomes a fascinating way of knowing moments of regional history.
